Sarah M. Kamal, M.D.
Dr. Sarah Kamal is a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal specialist dedicated to providing compassionate, personalized care for patients with complex retinal diseases. She brings expertise in the medical and surgical management of retinal conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, macular disorders, retinal vascular disease, epiretinal membranes, retinal tears and detachments, and other vitreoretinal disorders.
Dr. Kamal completed her vitreoretinal fellowship at Retina Group of Washington and Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Baylor College of Medicine’s Cullen Eye Institute. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and graduated magna cum laude from Rice University with a Bachelor of Arts in Cognitive Sciences and minors in Biochemistry and Neuroscience.
Throughout her training, Dr. Kamal has been actively involved in clinical research and education. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented her work at national and international ophthalmology meetings, including the American Society of Retina Specialists and the Vit-Buckle Society. Her research interests include diabetic retinopathy, retinal imaging, surgical outcomes, and advancing approaches to improve outcomes for patients with retinal conditions. She has received multiple awards recognizing excellence in research and quality improvement, including Baylor College of Medicine’s Everett L. Goar Research Award.
Dr. Kamal is passionate about building meaningful relationships with her patients and believes that excellent retinal care begins with listening, education, and shared decision-making. She strives to provide each patient with a clear understanding of their diagnosis and treatment options while helping them make informed decisions to protect and preserve their vision. She is an active member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Kamal enjoys mentoring students and trainees, participating in community outreach, and spending time with family and friends. She is fluent in Urdu and Hindi and speaks intermediate Spanish.
