Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive treatment that combines a specialized medication with a low-energy laser to target abnormal blood vessels in the eye. The medication, called verteporfin, is given through a vein and travels through the bloodstream to the eye.
Once the medication reaches the targeted area, your retina specialist applies a specialized laser to activate the verteporfin. This allows the treatment to selectively target abnormal blood vessels and reduce leakage while minimizing damage to surrounding tissue.
Following treatment, your skin and eyes may be unusually sensitive to sunlight for several days. It is important to avoid direct sunlight and bright indoor light and protect your skin with long sleeves, pants, a hat, and other protective clothing as directed by your physician.
