Dr. Sarah Kamal Joins Tennessee Retina
Tennessee Retina Welcomes Dr. Sarah Kamal to the Practice
Tennessee Retina is pleased to welcome Dr. Sarah Kamal, a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal specialist, to our team. Dr. Kamal will begin seeing patients with Tennessee Retina in September 2026.
Dr. Kamal specializes in the medical and surgical management of complex retinal diseases. Her clinical expertise includes diabetic retinopathy, macular disorders, retinal vascular disease, epiretinal membranes, retinal tears and detachments, and other vitreoretinal conditions.
Fellowship-Trained Retina Specialist
Dr. Kamal completed her vitreoretinal fellowship at Retina Group of Washington and Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Baylor College of Medicine’s Cullen Eye Institute and earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.
Before medical school, Dr. Kamal graduated magna cum laude from Rice University with a Bachelor of Arts in Cognitive Sciences and minors in Biochemistry and Neuroscience.
Her extensive training has prepared her to provide both medical and surgical care for patients with a wide range of retinal conditions.
A Commitment to Research and Education
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Kamal has been actively involved in clinical research and medical education throughout her training. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented her research at national and international ophthalmology meetings, including the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) and the Vit-Buckle Society.
Her research interests include diabetic retinopathy, retinal imaging, surgical outcomes, and developing new approaches to improve outcomes for patients with retinal diseases. She has also received multiple awards recognizing excellence in research and quality improvement, including the Everett L. Goar Research Award from Baylor College of Medicine.
Patient-Centered Retinal Care
Dr. Kamal believes that excellent retinal care begins with listening, education, and shared decision-making. She is passionate about building meaningful relationships with her patients and helping them understand their diagnosis and treatment options.
Her goal is to ensure that patients have a clear understanding of their condition and feel informed and confident when making decisions about their eye care.
Dr. Kamal is an active member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
