Intraocular Lens Dislocation
Intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation is a rare complication that can occur after cataract surgery. During cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL).
An IOL can sometimes shift out of its intended position, either shortly after surgery or years later. When this happens, the lens may affect vision and, in some cases, cause inflammation or other complications inside the eye.
The most common symptom of a dislocated IOL is a change in vision. Symptoms may include:
- Blurred or decreased vision
- Double vision
- Seeing the edge of the lens implant
- New visual disturbances
A dislocated IOL can also lead to complications such as increased eye pressure, inflammation, swelling in the retina, bleeding, or retinal detachment.
IOL dislocation can occur days, months, or even years after cataract surgery. Risk factors may include:
- Previous eye trauma or surgery
- Certain conditions that weaken the lens-supporting structures
- Inflammation inside the eye
- Conditions affecting connective tissue
A retinal specialist will perform a detailed eye examination to determine the position of the IOL and evaluate the health of the retina. Retinal imaging or an ultrasound of the eye may also be used when needed.
Most patients with a dislocated IOL have a good visual outcome with appropriate treatment. Your retinal specialist will recommend the approach that is best suited to your specific lens type, eye anatomy, and visual needs.
