Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy
Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy (PCV) is a retinal condition caused by abnormal blood vessels developing in the choroid, the layer of blood vessels beneath the retina. These abnormal vessels can leak fluid or bleed beneath the retina, potentially damaging the macula and affecting central vision.
PCV shares some characteristics with wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and can affect one or both eyes. Early diagnosis and regular monitoring are important because the condition can sometimes progress before noticeable vision changes occur.
PCV may cause sudden or gradual changes in central vision. Symptoms may include:
- Blurred or decreased central vision
- A blind or blurry spot near the center of vision
- Distorted or wavy vision
- A sudden change in vision caused by bleeding
Some people may have no symptoms in the early stages and may be diagnosed during a routine retinal examination.
Treatment is focused on stopping or reducing leakage and bleeding from the abnormal blood vessels and protecting central vision.
Common treatments include anti-VEGF injections, which block a substance that contributes to leakage from abnormal blood vessels, and photodynamic therapy (PDT), which uses a light-sensitive medication and specialized laser treatment to target abnormal vessels.
Treatment may require multiple sessions or ongoing monitoring, depending on how the condition responds.
