World Sight Day: Expanding Access
World Sight Day: Expanding Access to Retina Care Beyond Our Communities
For people living with retinal disease, access to specialized care can mean the difference between receiving sight-saving treatment and going without care.
In Guatemala, many communities have limited access to the specialized equipment, resources, and retina expertise needed to diagnose and treat retinal conditions. For Dr. Jay Glover, helping address this gap has become an important part of his work beyond the walls of his practice.
Building Access to Retina Care in Guatemala
Restoring sight isn't only about treating disease. It's about sharing knowledge, building resources, and creating access to care.
Dr. Glover has been leading efforts to help establish and strengthen retina care in Guatemala, with support from fellow Tennessee Retina physicians and physicians throughout Retina Consultants of America.
Through these efforts, physicians are helping provide essential equipment, resources, and specialized knowledge to support the development of retina care in communities where access has historically been limited.
The goal is not simply to provide care during a visit. It is to help build the foundation for ongoing, sustainable retina care, and giving local physicians the tools and knowledge they need to diagnose and treat retinal disease within their own communities.
Why Access Matters
Vision affects far more than the ability to see. For someone living with retinal disease, preserving or restoring vision can affect their ability to work, care for their family, maintain independence, and participate fully in daily life.
When specialized retina care is not readily available, the impact can extend far beyond a medical diagnosis.
That is why expanding access requires more than treating individual patients. It means investing in equipment, education, physician training, and resources that can help communities develop their own capacity to provide specialized retina care.
A Commitment to Restoring Sight
Tennessee Retina's commitment to preserving and improving vision extends beyond the communities we serve every day.
This World Sight Day, we recognize the importance of making sight-saving care more accessible and of helping build the knowledge, resources, and infrastructure needed to make that care possible for years to come.
